Hey, I'm Tim Steer!

Creator of The Base Mesh and Freelance 3D Artist
Thank you so much for checking out the site!

R2 and I

Back in 2022, I was at a bit of a crossroads...

I found myself contemplating the idea of leaving the Games Industry completely, slightly burnt out and unsure of what I wanted to do next. It's a feeling I'm sure many in the industry can relate to.

As I browsed through old personal projects on my computer, I thought it's a shame that these files are just sat there gathering virtual dust. I spent alot of time on them, and they were of a decent enough quality to use for something.  If I'm not using them, maybe someone else can?

I considered putting them all on online store and selling the individual files but it just didn't sit right with me. My desire to share the models wasn't incentivised by financial reward, it was more about just sharing for the sake of sharing. Saving people a bit of extra time, that felt like the right thing to do.

Over the years I've come across plugins, models, materials or bits of code tht I've downloaded for free. I am so incredibly grateful that the author of those assets took the time to share it with the world. I finally had something that I could contribute in return. Having learnt about the CC0 license through Polyhaven, and feeling inspired by their approach, the idea of The Base Mesh was born!

My goal was to create an expanding library of assets that can be used in a range of creative applications.

The meshes are low density enough to be imported directly into a game-engine, can quickly translate to a low/high poly asset, serve as a perfect placeholder for Game Prototyping or Film/TV Pre-vis or used for educational purposes.

Over the years I’ve come to realise that a ‘Base Mesh’ means more to me than just a mesh ready to be sculpted on. A base mesh can serve so many purposes, and that’s why I wanted to create a public asset library dedicated to it.

What you do with the models is entirely up to you, it’s my hope that in providing you a decent asset, that it’ll save you a little chunk of time which’ll allow you to get to the fun stuff much faster!

It didn’t feel right to try and put the content behind a paywall when so many more would benefit from the lack of financial barrier - so I went with a donation based approach.

If you are able to support me through a donation then that’d be awesome but no worries if not!

There are a few ways to do so if you are in a position to do so;

All of these will enable me to continue doing what I’m doing!

Otherwise, just spreading the word is a huge, huge help. This asset library will continuously grow and expand into new categories and props, so be sure to bookmark it or join the Discord community to stay updated!

I truly hope you find the site useful. Even knowing I've helped a few people out is worthwhile for me.

Thank you again for checking out The Base Mesh and happy creating!
